Flea treatment in Groningen: how to spot fleas
A flea is tiny, dark brown and jumps a surprisingly long way. You usually do not see the fleas themselves, just the effects. A simple test: comb your dog or cat over a damp white tissue. If the black specks turn reddish-brown, they are flea droppings.
- Small, itchy bites, often in clusters around ankles and lower legs.
- A pet scratching, licking or nibbling itself more than usual.
- Black specks in the coat, the pet bed or on the sofa.
- Jumping dots on a pale floor or on your socks.
Why one round of vacuuming is not enough
Adult fleas live on your dog or cat, but their eggs drop off wherever the animal lies. The larvae that hatch crawl into carpets, gaps between floorboards and sofa seams, then pupate inside a small, sticky cocoon that protects them well.
Those pupae are what make fleas so persistent. They can wait a long time and only hatch when they sense vibration, warmth or movement. That is why new fleas keep appearing for weeks after a treatment, and why a house left empty for a while can suddenly be full of fleas when you return. Keeping at it matters.
Our approach to flea treatment
We start at the source. Your vet treats every dog and cat in the house at the same time; otherwise the animals keep bringing in new fleas. Meanwhile, we inspect the home: where does the pet sleep, which rooms does it use and what are the floors like?
After a thorough vacuum, we treat floors, rugs, furniture and gaps with a professional product that only certified pest controllers may use. You get instructions in advance, including how long to wait before mopping. If plenty of fleas are still around after a few weeks, we arrange a second treatment. All our pest control in Groningen follows the same principle: tackle the cause first, then treat precisely.
Fleas without a pet?
It happens more often than you might think. Move into a home where a cat or dog used to live, and fleas that have been waiting in the carpet may welcome you. An abandoned bird's nest under the roof tiles or against the window frame can also produce fleas, which look for a new host once the chicks have flown.
Are the bites not around your ankles but on your arms, neck and shoulders, and do you see tiny black spots on the mattress? Then bed bugs are more likely than fleas. In that case, read about our bed bug treatment.
Your part, before and after treatment
What you do yourself largely determines how quickly the fleas disappear. These points make the difference:
- Vacuum all floors, the sofa, under beds and along skirting boards beforehand, and empty the bag or canister outside at once.
- Wash your pet's blanket and cushion on a hot cycle.
- Clear the floors so we can reach everywhere.
- Keep vacuuming daily after treatment, so hatching fleas come into contact with the product.
- Skip shop-bought foggers; they do not reach deep into gaps.
